Langton Musekiwa

Langton Musekiwa carves love, family and togetherness in Zimbabwean stone: faces held close, mother and child, families in embrace. He also makes welded metal and steel wire sculpture.

I carve love. When people see my work, I want them to feel family.

Biography

Langton Musekiwa was born in 1985 in Tafara, a township in Harare, Zimbabwe, into a family of artists. He grew up watching his brother, the Zimbabwean sculptor Martin Umali, carve stone, and learned from him. He began carving in 1999, while still at primary school, and completed his O-Levels at Tafara 1 High School in 2004.

In 2008 he moved to South Africa in search of larger opportunities for his work. He now lives and works full time as a stone sculptor in Chartwell, Gauteng.

His subject is love, family and togetherness: faces held close, mother and child, families in embrace. He traces these themes to his Shona culture and to his own family. He chooses each block by hand, then carves and polishes it himself.

His work ranges from pieces of around 20 cm for the home to monumental garden sculptures of two metres, and he carves to commission at any scale.

Placements and collections

Langton reports that his monumental works are installed at Paardevlei Lifestyle Estate, a Balwin Properties development in Cape Town, and that his sculptures are held in private collections in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
